Shrink all columns to maximum attrubute value length

I would love this. I know that currently we have the option to shrink all to minimum size but I always chose to do this manually so I can see some values as well
Default view is this:
snip1.JPG
Would it be a good suggestion to shrink all the column to each columns maximum (or average) value length? I did this manually and I think we have a great view of the columns and values:

Practically, it the latter example, we can see all the columns from the table (in this case) and a general view of the values as well.

Robert,
That is done for most list displays in Global Mapper, just not the search one because for some searches you may have millions of items and it would take a VERY long time to actually compute the maximum length of any item with a value in the complete result list. Now maybe what could be done is just looking at the first so many items to get the sizes, it just might be too small for some items.
Thanks,
Mike

Robert,
I have updated the search results to auto-size the columns based on the contents. For huge result sets, only the first 1000 rows are considered for sizing. The existing minimize option is still there. The different with it is that the columns are shrunk without consideration of the column header sizes, whereas the default picks the larger of the data length or column header size.
I have placed a new build at http://www.bluemarblegeo.com/downloads/global-mapper/global_mapper14.zip with the latest changes for you to try. Simply download that file and extract the contents into your existing v14.xx installation folder to give it a try. If you are using the 64-bit v14 version there is a new build at http://www.bluemarblegeo.com/downloads/global-mapper/global_mapper14_64bit.zip .
Thanks,

Just tried it. Works great. It was exactly what I thought of. Great job!

Hi Mike,
is there a way to disable auto-sizing this build ? It slows my editing as it's always resizing columns.
I am back using 13.2
thank you ! -
I could add an option for this pretty easily. Or would it be better to maybe only auto-resize the first search then just try and maintain sizes after that?
Thanks,
Mike

Well Mike,
it's really a pain, sometimes columns are reformating for more than 15 minutes. If possible, add a way to disable the auto format feature please.
thank you ! -
Is this happening when you resize or re-do a search? It should have only been checking the first 1,000 rows of the results to resize which shouldn't take a long, but I've reduced that to the first 100 rows to see if that makes it tolerable. I would expect that to be almost instant. I have placed a new build at http://www.bluemarblegeo.com/downloads/global-mapper/global_mapper14.zip with the latest changes for you to try. I noticed the behavior Joel mentioned when sorting a column from min to max value (or the other way around). All in all, I think that limiting to 100 lines is more than enough. I think even the first 25 lines are enough for a user to make an idea of what kind of data is stored in the dbf.

It happen with large files over 1-2GB, mainly lines with big database. I think it is entering a kind of loop. Happen after editing data.

I did find an issue where there was a redraw done a bunch of times while the columns were being resized. I was able to fix that, so perhaps that will make the issue better with large data sets. I can't reproduce anything else that is slow. I have placed a new build at http://www.bluemarblegeo.com/downloads/global-mapper/global_mapper14.zip with the latest changes for you to try.
