SLD - style layer descriptor

suggestion to support read/write of sld files
http://www.opengeospatial.org/standards/sld
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Styled_Layer_Descriptor
http://openlayers.org/dev/examples/sld.html
It's a suggestion - not critical.
I just wouldnt mind a method which I can have datasets styled a certain way, ie be able to download the canvec data and have it look like the cantopo product. They do have a style/renderer that works on arcview 9.2. http://geogratis.cgdi.gc.ca/geogratis/en/faq.html#q47 (and #q48, #q49).
But I think SLD would be a better move as it's an open standard. I mean, we're still waiting for ESRI to open their file geodatabase.
I do know that globalmapper automatically renders several datasets, but this would give some styling into the hands of the community and users.

I agree some kind of standard way to encode styles would be a useful addition (and there's little hope of ESRI actually documenting what they use). I will add this to the todo list.
Thanks,
Mike

Seems the the OS has started releasing SLDs for their vector data http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsite/support/products/styled-layer-descriptors/index.html
Also - USGS has some
http://frameworkwfs.usgs.gov/framework/sld/sld_content.html -
I have added an official item for this in our todo list (#11515).
Thanks,
Mike

We have added some initial support for writing SLD files and are looking for some feedback. Currently the option to save a SLD is on the * Styles tabs of the Options dialog for selected layers. The option works if either all features in the layer have the same styling or you have set up attribute-based styling.
You can get the latest build from http://data.bluemarblegeo.com/downloads/global-mapper/dailybuilds/ to try this out.
We may add SLD import support in a future release based on the amount of user interest.
Thanks,
Mike Childs

To update this thread, initial SLD save capabilities from a layer style were added in the v18.2 release. Support was further improved in subsequent 19.x releases.
Thanks,
Mike
