Blue Marble Geographics is pleased to announce the availability of the 2nd beta release of Global Mapper v14.0.

You can download and install the v14.0 beta from the links below. Global Mapper v14.0 will install alongside any older version of Global Mapper so you don't have to worry about overwriting any of your existing files or losing your currently registered version. After installing, you can request a 2 week trial from the initial registration dialog that appears.

32-bit: http://www.globalmapper.com/downloads/global_mapper14_setup.exe
64-bit: http://www.globalmapper.com/downloads/global_mapper14_setup_64bit.exe

Among the significant changes in version 14.0 are:

- Support for reading and writing data into spatial databases including, ESRI ArcSDE, ESRI File and Personal Geodatabases, MySQL, Oracle Spatial, and PostGIS
- A significantly reorganized Digitizer right-click menu with functions conveniently organized by type along with a new Favorites toolbar that allows quick access to commonly used commands.
- The addition of a new convenient Terrain Analysis menu containing such functions as Generate Contours, Combine Terrain Layers, Generate Watershed, and other terrain tools.
- Support for Web Feature Services (WFS) providing access to online vector data sources
- Support for exporting loaded data to CADRG/CIB, ASRP/ADRG, and Garmin JNX format files
- A new tool for calculating the volume between two terrain surfaces
- A new terrain analysis tool for delineating ridgelines
- Improved attribute searching with the option to select specific layers to search
- Enhanced Digitizer editor functions such as freehand rotating and cropping multiple areas to a line
- Updated copy/paste functionality that allows the selection of a destination layer when pasting
- A new tool for calculating the cost of premium data purchases based on export area and required resolution

In addition to the major new additions for v14.0 listed above, the following changes have been made since v14.0 beta 1:
- The startup graphic now has 'Open Sample Data' replacing the Control Center button and the Find Data Online button is no longer there (it is available under the Help menu now)
- The Favorites drop-down has a new option for setting up custom shortcut keys, allowing you to assign custom shortcut keys to any of the available favorite items
- Garmin JNX format files can now be imported and improvements have been made to the JNX export
- NMF format files can be loaded
- Several fixes to the newly re-organized right-click menus of the Digitizer Tool

As with all previous releases, version 14 expands the list of file formats that can be imported and exported by Global Mapper and offers support for many new and updated projections and datums. All of the improvements and enhancements are listed in the What's New document that is displayed during installation.

The official release of Global Mapper is planned for mid September, 2012. For questions about upgrading or network licensing, email gmorders@bluemarblegeo.com.

Global Mapper's development is driven in large part by comments and suggestions from existing customers. To that end, we encourage your feedback on this latest release and we look forward to providing the GIS functionality that you need in future versions.

I just tried installing this beta (did not have previous version installed) and received an error when I tried to open the app: Runtime error 216 at 000(several of them)5D8DF3. Tried again, got same error message. Any ideas?

Did you get the error when running the installer or running the application itself after a successful install? If the former, you may have gotten a corrupt or incomplete download, so I would try downloading again. I have downloaded and installed both the 32-bit and 64-bit builds from those links myself so the files on the server are ok.

    Thanks,

It said the install was successful, but immediately opened the error message. I downloaded the file again, re-installed and got the same error. Last night I tried a copy I downloaded a few days ago (end August) and got the same error, diffrent bunch of numbers at the end of the message. I do not understand this as I have successfully installed Version 13 (64 bit) plus updates. My next attempt will be the 32 bit version.

If you try and run the installed .exe from your C:\Program Files\GlobalMapper14_64bit folder do you get the same error message? Do you have any spatial databases (Oracle in particular) installed on your machine?

Yes I get the same error. Not sure about the Oracle or other db, I have standard install of QGIS, Illustrator with MP v9.0, and the home use version of ArcGIS amongst other programs, I am sure one of the items listed uses Oracle. The 32 bit version did install OK.

Ok so you can run the 32-bit version fine, but the 64-bit version crashes when you try to run it? That is a bit of a clue. I am going to note this to our DB developer to see if he knows what might be causing the problem with that setup in 64-bit only. I think we can eliminate ArcGIS as the ESRI libraries are only 32-bit.

    Hello Mike,

I just scanned the v14 digitizer tool add-ons. The favorites toolbar is similar to a one that I requested a long time ago - a shortcut bar with several (e.g ten) buttons. I still lack the requested functionality - to assign each button an action e.g. create area of type X, next button - create point of type Y, next button - create point of type Z, etc.

Is there a chance to see in the final V14 such a goodie?

    Regards,

    Vax,

There aren't plans for adding favorites that are more specific than one of the existing commands on the right-click popup menus or toolbar, but the existing Quick Point Creator option can get you what you are describing for point features. You can open that up and add whatever point types you want there and have a button for each point type so you can quickly add points of that type. For areas and lines the drawing process is more of the time, so you still just have to select the type you want at the end. Since the type is remembered if you digitize the same feature types back-to-back you shouldn't have to change it much though.

There is also an option to assign custom shortcut keys on the favorites toolbar which is helpful for making multiple commands easily accessible.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

    Thanks,

    Mike

    Hi,

I developed the DB access functionality in Global Mapper 14. I have a question related to your problem.
Yes I get the same error. Not sure about the Oracle or other db, I have standard install of QGIS, Illustrator with MP v9.0, and the home use version of ArcGIS amongst other programs, I am sure one of the items listed uses Oracle. The 32 bit version did install OK.

Can you tell me the full product name and version number for the home-use version of ArcGIS that you have installed?

    Thanks,

    Dave_in_Edmonton,

It's possible the check for Esri existence was crashing for you in 64-bit mode so we changed that a bit. I have placed a new build at http://www.globalmapper.com/global_mapper14_64bit.zip with the latest changes for you to try. Simply download that file and extract the contents into your existing v14.xx installation folder to give it a try.

    Thanks,

    Thanks a lot Mike!

The Quick Point Creator bar is a really nice one for easy editing. I wonder why don't you expand it a little bit - to make it a "Quick Creator bar". It will be good to have also area and line buttons for different types plus shortcut key assignment for each button. I suppose this should be not so difficult as you already have the foundations for the point buttons in Quick Point Creator, and the shortcut key system in the Favorites toolbar.

I tried the new build as listed by Mike above, received the same error as originally. The 32 bit build from a few days ago still works, but a bit of a delay starting (compared to 64 bit v 13.2). Is this due to the beta trial nature of the current install?

Darn I wonder what the problem is. With that type of error it pretty much has to be a crash loading one of the new 3rd-party DLLs that we are using as any type of crash in Global Mapper itself would be caught and displayed in a different way. Hopefully this isn't a widespread problem, but at least so far you are the only one reporting it.

I don't see any significant difference in the startup time between 32-bit and 64-bit v13.2 and v14.0, but if you don't have a full v14 license yet there would be some extra license searching done at startup that would be much faster when you have a full license.

    Thanks,

    Dave,

What operating system are you using?

It looks like we have the same version of ArcGIS installed, but I have not been able to reproduce your problem on Windows 7 64.

I did a Google search for "Runtime error 216", and found information that suggests it may be caused by a trojan, or other malware infection, which causes registry corruption.

Here is a link to one explanation:

I have added an item for the task list (task #10888) to add support for quick creating areas and lines and possibly adding shortcut keys to each button. I haven't decided yet if it would be best to have separate "quick create" dialogs for areas and lines or just to combine all of the quick create stuff on the same dialog. I'm leaning towards all on one.

Thanks Mike, this will be a good reason for me to upgrade to V14 as soon as this feature is available!

All on one seems fine. Usually editing - adding of objects - is not restricted to a single object kind so it will be handy to have all the used object types in sight.

Not sure if this helps, but I can send a copy of the latest "crash dump" file from latest attempt to run 64 bit version. Of note, now windows reports an error, before I was getting the runtime error 216. Still troubleshooting. Not sure how to send it as the file is 5 MB and would not upload as an attachment here.

That might be helpful as we might be able to tell what DLL load is crashing. If you zip it up you should be able to post it as an attachment here, or you can email to gmsupport@bluemarblegeo.com.

    Dave,

Thanks for the that, it looks like the lockup may be in the jnxlib64.dll library which provides read/write support for Garmin JNX files. This is new in v14. I have placed a new 64-bit build at http://www.globalmapper.com/global_mapper14_64bit.zip which removed the JNX library. Can you try that and see if it works? If so I will contact the library creator and see if he has any ideas. I will also make the JNX library delay loading until you actually use JNX import/export, so it won't affect 99% of users and will allow you to run the 64-bit version unmodified.

    Thanks,

Great I'm glad we got that sorted. I have now updated GM to load the JNX library dynamically when actually needed, so you won't need a special build going forward, you just won't be able to use JNX files in the 64-bit version on your machine where it crashes. Likely not something that will affect you :) I have placed a new build at http://www.globalmapper.com/global_mapper14.zip with the latest changes for you to try. Simply download that file and extract the contents into your existing v14.xx installation folder to give it a try. If you are using the 64-bit v14 version there is a new build at http://www.globalmapper.com/global_mapper14_64bit.zip .

What kind of an error are you getting? Global Mapper doesn't use any Delphi itself, but some of the 3rd-party libraries it uses (the QuickPDF library in particular) are written in Delphi.

    Mike,

I'm afraid my previous message was not informative enough.

I was talking about JNXLib64.dll. It's compiled in Delphi XE2.
I've opened the dump file from message #25, and it appears that it's Delphi RTL initialization code where the exception occurred.
The stack looks like there was a nested exception, but the dump does not contain enough data to trace the exact location of the initial exception.
