Make use of the <Index in Layer> tabb

Hello all,
As I often load my .dbf files in database tables, I need a column with unique values in my shapefile. As it happens, often I do not have such a column so I want to create it.
Is there a way to create this column in GM? I would like to have only unique values in my new created column, let's say from 1 to N, N = the total number of features in my shapefile.
I have such a count in the <Index in Layer> column but it cannot be actually exported / used.
Thank you,

I later found the Setup Attribute Calculation Option. It can be found if you right click the layer in the OCC under CALC ATTR.
Sorry but I still think a delete button would be useful.
