cropping .sid ortho imagery files in GM?

Hi all,

Is it possible to edit .sid files in Global Mapper? I have several .sid files with black chunks i need croppoed out, but I dont want to lose the geospatial referencing by exporting and editing .tif files. So it a nutshell, is there some way to 'mask off' the black areas in these .sid files?

    You can easily mask off those black areas either by cropping to a polygon on the Cropping tab of the Options dialog for the layer or just setting up transparency for the layer. You can then export to a new file and maintain all of the geo-referencing. The one limitation is you can't create a new MrSID file, so you would have to export to another image format, like ECW or JPEG2000 which offer comparable compression but are more open formats.
