Jnx file format

Hi,
Garmin have a format that they use for there birdseye product this over come the 100 title limit imposed by KMZ.
Would it be possible to add this format to Global mapper. Details of the format can be found here.

if you look thought the forum there is currenlty a tool to take osm map tile storage tile and convert them to jnx.
There are also various other tools written by the creator of mapc2mapc. It would be nice to be able to export directly from your program to JNX
Cheers

I will add this to the todo list, it does look like enough of the format may have been decoded to allow support for JNX. However I would think Garmin could also upgrade their firmware to support additional tiles from KMZ if they are supported from JNX, I wouldn't think what really matters is the total memory usage required, not necessarily just the fixed number of tiles. Actually if I still worked at Garmin I can think of several approaches to implement this so that much larger numbers of tiles could be used without running out of memory using a mechanism similar to map catalogs in Global Mapper. Hopefully they are working on a more flexible approach like that.
Thanks,
Mike

Thanks mike.
Here is a little somthing to help you on your way. Roger the auther of MAPC2MAPC has release the source code for this OSM to JNX converter.
This might help you -
same code but with added comments

HI mike
here is some better code for you this has been written in c and has loads of comments so sould be easier to read.
cheers and thanks for all your help -
Just a quick note,
It has been discoved that a jnx can hold 50,000 tiles per level not the orginal 6250
thanks

any news on this

It's on our todo list, but we haven't gotten to it yet.
Thanks,

Any progress.
Looking at the number of views this looks like lots of people want this option. -
Still on our todo list, but it is a huge todo list. Where can you see the number of views of a post?
Thanks,
Mike

Go to the parent forum of this thread and you can see a column that will contain the number of replies and the number of views (this one as of right now has 821 views)
-
Ah I see, that is pretty cool. Sorting by the number of views though it seems like have several hundred or even thousands of views isn't that uncommon, I wonder if when a search engine crawls the site that counts as a view.
Thanks,
Mike

I don't believe the search engines are counted as views. Good question though.

Looking at the possibilities by using the JNX format over the KML I sure hope GM will support the format!

JNX format is supported by garmin but its locked down. There has been considrable effort made to unlock the format.
A tool like global mapper would allow me to use all the maps i have from other units on my garmin. I am sure there are lots of other user who are in the same boat. -
Mike, do you think you will be able to include the jnx format into the GM 13 build????
That would be great!
Especially because the new Garmin Montana has a much better support and quality for viewing raster maps! -
We are getting pretty close to the v13 release so there isn't too much time left for a new format like that. We will be updating the existing Garmin raster KMZ export to allow for new units that support larger map counts (like apparently 500 on the Montana), which should allow for larger data sets until the JNX format can be supported.
Thanks,
Mike

Good news. I will be upgrading my GM version the day it will export to JNX!
-
Is there any chance JNX will be supported in the next release now 13 is out
-
I have now marked it as a high priority rather than normal priority todo item, although other than this thread I still haven't heard any demand for this format.
Thanks,
Mike

Thanks.
How do you work out the demand for a format. This thread has over 2500 page views so at least a few people are inrested. lol -
The page views include a lot of web search engines and other automated system so it's hard to work out actual demand. I usually gauge it from emails that we get. Items on the todo list are prioritized based on the perceived user demand and also how difficult they will be to implement. For instance something very easy to do might get done even with a little demand, whereas a high-demand item that is very hard would be delayed more. It's all what generates the most additional sales per amount of time devoted to the item.

Mike

Mike, do you think you will be able to implement the jnx format within the near future?????
That would be great! -
It's currently on the schedule for early 2012.

GREAT!!! Thank You!!! Can't wait therefore! -
Please try to include jnx into Batch Convert wizard. Of course the target should be jnx file. The values of Scale and Product ID fields of jnx can be entered later.
Thanks for consideration! -
Yes once we add JNX export it should move into the batch convert tool without any problems.
Thanks,
Mike
