I am fairly new to Global Mapper and have been recently sent some GIS files with the .mxd file extension is it possible to open these?

No .mxd files are proprietary ESRI files and cannot be loaded into Global Mapper.

    Thanks,

The mxd files only point to the data and tells arcmap how to display is among other things. If all you got is the mxd, even with ESRI tools it's worthless. You need the other stuff, probably ending in a format like .shp, .mdb, .gdb, etc. If you have the original data, it's certainly possible you can load it.
