Where has World Imagery gone?

Hi,
I have a copy of Global Mapper 14, and have been using free satellite imagery from the World Imagery link to build a prototype application. When I looked yesterday, though, the World Imagery link has disappeared from the Online Data Sources browser in GM. I can't find anything on the ArcGIS site that suggests that anything has changed, but I can't now browser to satellite imagery through GM.
I'm probably being dumb, but could anyone enlighten me as to what has changed..?
Many thanks,
Dave

Hi David,
That is a link to a 3rd party site, and the link just recently changed. This has been updated in the most recent version of Global Mapper. New builds of Global Mapper and Global Energy Mapper v14 were released last week that contain these updates and can be downloaded here: http://www.bluemarblegeo.com/products/global-mapper.php.
If you install the most recent release of Global Mapper v14, the World Imagery link should start working for you again. -
The latest is v14.1.6. It should be in that. You can get it from Global Mapper Downloads.
Thanks,
Mike

Where has World Imagery gone? for V13.2.1,
How do I get it back into it since it is no longer in the list of available list of on line data sources?
Also was V13.2.1 the final build of that previous release?
Thanks

Craig,
The last official installer of v13 was v13.2.2 and that's at Global Mapper Downloads.
Several of the online source and the free address search server that we used made enough changes a few weeks ago to require significant software changes to keep supporting them in Global Mapper. So they are only available in v14.1.4 and later. They were removed from earlier versions where they could no longer be used due to the required changes.
Thanks,
Mike

What you do is FRAUD.
I paid near 500$, for a software that I even didn'T used for a complete year. And now, we can't use it anymore...
I'LL REMEMBER ABOUT GLOBAL MAPPER. I'LL NEVER BUY YOUR PRODUCT AGAIN.
And the only reason why you removed world imagery is to push your customer to buy the new version. YOU ARE LIAR AND MALICIOUS persons.
Technically, your explanation has no sens for me, who are software developper... Not everybody are idiots.
I'll never see global mapper like before. -
And watch the pub. I always told good things about global mapper. This time is up.
-
I'm sorry you feel that way, but we have a statement on the bottom of the online source dialog that has always been there that says:
"IMPORTANT NOTE: These data sources are on external servers that we have no control over. The data may draw/export very slowly or become unavailable at any time. We have no control over this."
As a software developer you know that online sources change technology and also Terms of Service all the time, and sometimes older versions of software won't be able to handle those changes without significant changes. In this case we had to make significant software changes to continue using the sources and they were removed all the way up to v14.1.4, which is the first one that had the necessary changes (I know because I wrote the changes and there were a lot!). If we had just wanted to make people upgrade we would have just removed them for v13 and not also for people that already had a v14 install as there is no upgrade fee involved there, just extra hassle and support.
Thanks,
Mike

fvignola, as Mike makes clear, they can't control external data sources and they cannot feasibly maintain past versions of Global Mapper - that would soon become a nightmare of incompatibilities.
If you look through these forum posts, unlike almost any other forum I can think of, you will see them populated with helpful responses by the developer, often resulting in updates to the software functionality. Most forums, whilst useful, survive on the helpfulness of other application users, and the quality of advice on offer can range from expert to appalling misinformation.
I am not aware of any other mainstream software which is so driven by requests from its user base, and I can't quite comprehend how Mike manages to be so responsive to his users and still develop the software as he does. Having a Global Mapper licence is as close as you can get to having your own GIS developer in-house!
Also please bear in mind that Global Mapper provides all of its functionality at a fraction of the price of the 'big boys' in GIS. We have been using GM since 2009, Version 11. Given their superb service, we don't begrudge Mike and the team at Blue Marble any of the upgrade costs, as they always bring benefits which far exceed those costs. The reality of this is that roughly every year we have paid around £100 ($140?) per licence, to maintain cutting-edge GIS capability. It's never easy to part with your hard-earned, especially in these difficult times, but this is money very well-spent :-)

Is there any way I can find out which is the date of the raster file downloaded for a specific area from World Imagery? aka to know if I see a satellite image from 2012 or 2006 and so on
-
One more question that came to me.
How does GM work with this data when the connection is interrupted?
for eg: I want to download world imagery for a county. I start the export and soon enough GM enters in the not responding mode.
what happens from now on? GM keeps exporting the data in the background, but what if the connection is interrupted? will I have the possibility to resume the export as to be sure that I will have the entire coverage in the end?
I should mention the fact that I am ok with the time it will take to download so it will not bother me if it takes a day, a week, or a month.
To sum up:
1. how do I know the date when the satellite image was takes for my area of interest?
2. what happens when the connection is interrupted while I export the data? -
Robert,
If the connection is interrupted things will get extremely slow as the same location is tried at different zoom levels to see if it's just a missing tile. When everything finally fails it will end up as blank at that tile location and everything afterwards.
For very large exports from online sources I would suggest using the Gridding tab to break up the export into smaller pieces, then if it fails and you abort you can get the connection restored and start the same export again. On the Gridding tab check the box to skip existing tiles, so it should resume where it left off.
In v14.2 if there is known Metadata for the source you can open the Metadata dialog for the layer and see the contents of the metadata URL for the source to get more information.
Thanks,
Mike

ok, that's good to know. I'll follow the tip next time and for now, I sure hope the connection will not be interrupted. I'm at 36% in 3 days.
