WAsP Maps.

Hello,
I am completely new to Global Mapper but I am trying to make a map to use in WAsP.
I have already downloaded the DEM files from the USGS and it is relatively simple to load those in and make contour maps.
I have no idea how to make a roughness map.
I have found the area in the land map use from NLCD but dont know how to isolate the area I need, export it or assign roughness values which could then be exported.
Is there a guide which helps me to do this.
Any help would be great as this is part of my thesis.
Thanks in advance.

If you have your land cover data loaded, either from your own file or from the built-in online land cover sources in the File->Download Online Imagery/Data menu command, you can right-click on it in the Control Center and select to create a roughness grid. See http://www.globalmapper.com/helpv14/Help_ControlCenter.html for a little bit more explanation. Once you have the roughness grid (make sure to check the option to create roughness areas when you create the grid), you can then export those areas to a Wasp Map file just like you exported the contours maps.
Let me know if I can be of further assistance.
Thanks,
Mike

Hello and thanks for the help.
Does it matter in what projection the data is exported as?
Should I convert it into UTM or keep it as WGS 84, Mercator? -
I would convert to UTM as Mercator will be heavily distorted in the X direction unless you are near the equator.
Thanks,
Mike

Again thank you for the quick reply.
I the area I have chosen to export isn't a straight rectangle after I have converted it.
I converted it by going to tools-configure-projection and then change it from Mercator to UTM.
Will that be sufficient for when I export it into WAsP map format?
Thanks

That's fine, UTM is not orthogonal to Mercator so it will be skew somewhat unless it is exactly at the UTM zone center. It will be much more accurate in terms of relative scale though.
Thanks,
Mike
