Surface Area

I would be grateful if someone could advise me if it is possible for Global Mapper v14 to calculate the surface area of actual ground in, for example, a particular (farmer's) field, taking into account the slope? I have both contour and DTM data from Ordnance survey, and I have a shape file delineating the field boundaries. For the time being I have created an elevation grid for the area covered by the contour data.

So...
Should I use contour data or DTM data (10m grid)?
How do I select the particular field?
And if GM can calculate the surface area, how does one go about it?

Anybody's help on this would be much appreciated! Thank you

Actually there is a way to do this but it's buried in the volume calculation. So select the area describing the field boundary with the Digitizer Tool, then right-click and select the Measure submenu option to measure volume. Do a cut-and-fill against a cut height well below the data (like 0). You won't care about the volume reports, but also included are the 2D and 3D surface area of the cut and fill areas. All should be cut so the 3D cut surface area would be what you want.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

    Thanks,
