Any way to draw a Rectangle snapped to a Grid?

Hi

I frequently want to create a rectangle (with which to constrain exports) which is drawn snapped to whole kilometres or 100's of metres. Is there a way to draw whilst snapping to a user-defined grid? At present, I draw somewhere close to the grid by eye then go in and edit the vertices, which is very slow compared to just snapping to a grid.

Sorry if it's there already and I just missed it - please tell me how! I'm on V12.

Thanks

If you right-click in the Digitizer Tool and select to create a rectangle by specifying the coordinates, you can then just enter the exact values that you want directly rather than going in an editing the vertices afterwards.

Hi Mike, thanks for the quick response. Yes, I tried that and it is much easier, but I don't always know what the coordinates are in advance. I just look at an area of interest (aerial photo, irregular polygon) and want to draw a rectangle around that to the nearest (say) 1000m. So the best way I have found is as you say, but select "Draw a box" then tweak those coordinates to the nearest 1000m (or whatever). Being able to snap to the currently displayed grid would make it a quick but accurate visual point-and-click exercise rather than a typed numbers exercise.

I decided to improve the snapping with grid lines to make this easier. I updated snapping to snap to grid lines (there is an option to turn this off on the Vector Display tab of the Configuration dialog) and also to snap to any feature intersection (like grid line intersections) even if there is no vertex at the intersection. I have placed a new build at http://www.globalmapper.com/global_mapper13.zip with the latest changes for you to try. Simply download that file and extract the contents into your existing v13.xx installation folder to give it a try. If you are using the 64-bit v13 version there is a new build at http://www.globalmapper.com/global_mapper13_64bit.zip .

Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

    Thanks,

It's always a a pleasure to see you pick up a suggestion, obviously go away for a few hours, and then say, go on then, there it is... Guess I'm going to have to upgrade again. One thing's for sure, I can't argue with it! I have to say, I looked at the V13 upgrade and couldn't see any "must have" features for my specific purposes - although I'm sure plenty of others did.

But now there definitely is a must-have feature, just for me ;)

I hope others enjoy it too.

    Thanks Mike

    OK, I upgraded...

I have a custom grid of 1000 ground units (1km) displayed.

How do I activate snapping so that a rectangle is drawn snapped to the grid?

    Thanks

Did you get the new build too? Your build date should be from yesterday or today. If you have that, it should automatically snap when you draw, just click at the intersection and it should snap to it. You should see a little dot where the snap will occur so you can easily verify that you are close enough for the snap to go where you want.

    Thanks,
