I really like Global Mapper and only thing which i like to see and use is support for imorting RAW images from digitall cameras (CANON (CR2), Nikon (NEF)...). I like to have tis feature because I can geotag this raw image formats with other tool and like to see it on maps in Global Mapper.
Thank you

A RAW file is the same as a BIL file, so you just need to create a .hdr to go with it to describe the layout. The .hdr goes in the same folder and might look something like the following (with numbers obviously changed to match the image your camera creates):

    BYTEORDER I
    LAYOUT BIL
    NROWS 936
    NCOLS 735
    NBANDS 3
    NBITS 8
    ULXMAP 369900.0
    ULYMAP 4331511.0
    XDIM 30.000000000000
    YDIM 30.000000000000

Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

    Thanks,

That's fine if you have few images, but I have more than 200-300 images which I collect during one short flight, and I do not have so much time to create headers for all of that images.

The problem is that the RAW files don't store anywhere in them the layout of the file, so there isn't any way to automatically determine things like the number of pixels wide and tall the image is, the bit depth, etc. That kind of information has to come from somewhere, like a HDR file, or perhaps I could add a way to either prompt the user or add the dimensions to a script so you could automatically process them with a simple script. Do they all have the same dimensions?

    Thanks,

Could Global Mapper parse EXIF tags perhaps?

Silly question on my part. The EXIF specification does not apply to RAW images. The information stored varies by manufacturer. Which would probably be too hard, unless there's an open-source library somewhere.

If you have JPG with EXIF information Global Mapper already uses that to place the image on the map as a point, then you can see the actual image by selecting it with the Feature Info Tool.

After a quick look—there is a free PERL library to read EXIF information from RAW files. ExifTool: http://owl.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool. There is an example C++ wrapper among other things.

I did some looking and found that what I was referring to as a RAW file may not be what the cameras actually have. I was talking about just a flat binary file with no header information, like a BIL, that is sometimes also called a RAW file, but looking at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raw_image_format it seems like there are lots of different RAW formats that do indeed have headers. Can someone provide a sample?

    Thanks,

TJHB, taht's what I'm using to geotag my Canon RAW (*.CR2) images. In fact that is combination of free software GEOTAG:
http://geotag.sourceforge.net/ and ExifTool: http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/ (or from the TJHB link above).
With that sowtware I'm able to put GPS information (from GPX track) to every single collected image. What I'm looking for is how to display them in GlobalMapper. There is no problem with JPG images with GEO information in EXIF.

If you can provide some samples we may be able to add support. The main issue is that there are dozens of different RAW formats depending on the camera manufacturer, but hopefully there is enough similarity that we could add support for a bunch at once.

    Thanks,

    Mike
