Gm hangs while closing layers when searching attributes

This is in no way a major glitch but i noticed today that GM took a while to process what was going on in a particular circumstance.

I was viewing a geotiff background image, with a .shp forest cover layer and a .shp road layer over top. I would search by attributes and then double click my selection to show my selected forest stand on the map. In this case i was searching for forest stands > 100 years old. I had selected a particular stand to view on the map.

I was viewing my selection on the map with the table of attributes still showing but minimized. When i went to close a layer (roads) that was not part of the attribute search and not needed at this point, GM seemed to hang for 10 seconds or so while it closed that layer.

It did not crash annd functioned normally in every way afterwards but i was surprised that a layer that was only displayed and being closed but not involved in the search had an effect on the speed of any operation at that point. I was zoomed into a 1:10000 scale when i was doing this. My computer is a Win XP, SP 3, Proc 1.67 AMD, 1 gb RAM, 200 GB HD.

I do not know if the size of my files had any part in it but the .tif file was 96.8 mb, the road file 3.54 mb, and the forest stand layer 100 mb. Perhaps i approached the limit of data which can be handled easily at one time by the software. I certainly don't need the data set to be this large, the .tif file could be made to be smaller for what i need.

Completely happy with the program overall, if this is an easy fix for an upcoming version, great, if not, still the handiest GIS program around!

What was probably happening was a rebuild of the available attribute list for the search (to know what columns to display, etc.). Since a layer was going away that had to be rebuilt, and for a 100MB vector file it might take several seconds.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

    Thanks,
