Make the Grid a Layer

One of the nasty surprises of exporting vectors is that the reference grid gets exported right along with your vector data. Probably happens with raster data too.
So why not make the grid another layer and have it show in the layer manager? That way it's obvious that the grid has valid exportable objects and a simple click turns it on-off like any other layer?

You can just disable grid line display on the General Options tab of the Configuration dialog prior to doing your export to get rid of the grid lines. In general when you export if something is drawn on the screen then it will be exported (if the export format is compatible with that type of data).
Let me know if I can be of further assistance.
Thanks,
Mike

I'm aware of all that. I'm still suggesting that the grid be made a layer. Much more obvious that it's exportable in the layer manager and quicker to enable and disable.global_mapper wrote: »You can just disable grid line display on the General Options tab of the Configuration dialog prior to doing your export to get rid of the grid lines. That's why I used the suggestion forum rather than Tech Support.
Would you consider it as a suggestion?

Roger,
I just remembered, you can use Shift+G to quickly enable and disable the grid so you don't have to go through the dialog.
Thanks,

Thanks but . . .global_mapper wrote: »I just remembered, you can use Shift+G to quickly enable and disable the grid so you don't have to go through the dialog.
The last thing I need is another "swastika-footpedal" key sequence to remember. If this suggestion gains no traction, I prefer things as they are.
It's the whole incremental nature of the Global Mapper interface that troubles me. Even you, who invented Global Mapper has trouble remembering all the possible sequences. With my fading memory, I can't remember things from two weeks ago. So I'm looking for more intuitive UI changes.
Since in all functional aspects the grid is a "user" layer, why not just treat it as such and add it to the layer manager. Obviously it's a special layer class, but a layer it is. Perhaps you could use color in to denote its special nature. Perhaps a check box in the Configuration/General Tab to add the grid to layers would be an option.

I'll add an item to the todo list to add the grid layer to the Control Center. It would probably be a low priority item though as it doesn't really add any functionality or make anything a lot easier, it just makes things a bit clearer.
Thanks,
Mike
