Open hgt SRTM files

I noticed that globalmapper can open .hgt SRTM files (from places such as here http://www.viewfinderpanoramas.org/dem3.html ) but only if they are zipped.

If you unzip the file then global mapper refuses to 'see' the .hgt

I find this very odd. If the file is zipped I can't really see what it is, but if I unzip it globalmapper won't open it. Why is it set up like this? Is it just to confuse us, or is there a deliberate train of thought behind it?

    You should be able to directly load .hgt files, even outside of a zip file. However the 'Supported Commonly Used Type' filter will show .zip files, but not .hgt files, so you'll need to change your file filter so that you can see the files.
