Can anyone tell me if it is possible to load OpenCycleMap as a WMS layer and how I would go about it?

I don't think that the OpenCycleMap data is provided as a WMS source, at least not that I could find.

I'm guessing if people really want it, it could be added the same way openstreetmap is there. I'm pretty sure it uses the same software to serve the tiles.

I'm guessing you are right. We do have plans to allow users to add any generic tiled image non-WMS source that is setup similar to the OpenStreetMap data in a future release.

Neat!
So basically, google/bing/tilecache tiling schemes? I think they probably have the same tile extents, though I'm unclear on the directory/tile name that they use.

Now, I know esri has online services that fit the google/bing tiling, for example

I guess this site has many of the services

The tiling scheme that I've referring to is any scheme where the image tiles exist for each zoom scale on an accessible server, so they can simply be downloaded via a normal URL for the image file. This is how the OSM tiles are provided. This method provides very fast access to the data, typically much faster than WMS. Global Mapper will just have to add support for users to specify the tile naming scheme used.
