Questions on Bearings

ALCON,

I was wondering if it is possible to change the format the Bearing is presented as? For example, could it be changed to mils as used with the MGRS? Also, Global Mapper appears to use True North for Bearing information. Is there anyway to change this to Grid or Magnetic North?

Thanks in advance for your time,

JD

    JD,

We have just recently added support for displaying bearings in decimal degrees or the current position display format, so another format could probably be added. How exactly would you like to be able to display them?

Support for bearings relative to magnetic north could also be added I think. I'll look into that as well.

    Thanks,

    Mike

    Mike,

Wow, quick response. If it could be added, presenting the Bearing in mils using grid north as its reference would be extremely useful to me. Currently I get by mathematically correcting the Bearing in Degrees from True North to Grid North and then multiplying that answer by 17.778 to get the answer in mils. Granted it’s not very hard to do, but after 30-40 points it gets kind of old lol.

Originally I was just asking if the program had the mil-True North capability and I had just missed it, But if your open to suggestions that would be my wish. Even without it, I have found your tool to be the best mapping assistant I have ever used.

    Thanks again,

    JD

    JD,

I have completed adding support for displaying bearings in mils and also displaying them relative to True North or Magnetic North. Both options are in the right-click menu in the Measure Tool.

I have placed a new build at http://www.globalmapper.com/global_mapper10.zip with the change for you to try. Simply download that file and extract the contents into your existing v10.xx installation folder to give it a try.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

    Thanks,

    Mike

    Mike,

The new build works great. Would it be possible to add a selection for Grid Azimuth? This will allow the user to switch between True, Magnetic, and Grid Azimuth.

I wish I could have replied sooner, but often I'm without internet access.

Again, thanks for the awesome program and support.

    Mike,

Thats exactly what i needed, thank you very much. I only wish I had checked your form years ago and realized how responsive you guys are to user requests.

Will i need to hold on to these files or will these enhancements be added to the general release program?

    Again, great job and thanks,

    JD

    JD,

These changes will be in all future builds and releases, so there is no need to hold on to these particular build files.

    Thanks,

I have added a checkbox option to the distance/bearing/COGO dialog to allow bearing entry in mils6400 rather than degrees. I have placed a new build at http://www.bluemarblegeo.com/downloads/global-mapper/global_mapper14.zip with the latest changes for you to try. Simply download that file and extract the contents into your existing v14.xx installation folder to give it a try. If you are using the 64-bit v14 version there is a new build at http://www.bluemarblegeo.com/downloads/global-mapper/global_mapper14_64bit.zip .

Thank you very much for answering so fast...

    Thank you one more time,

I have updated that dialog to allow selecting the bearing units so you can select degrees or mils. HI...
    I've just tried the build but I didn't see any change;
Maybe I didn't well explain my request
I was talking about using mils in this window

That's exactly the dialog the change was added on. Perhaps you got a cached copy of the build. I have also made sure to rebuild everything just in case. Can you re-download and see if it now works? The build date should say 030613 on the title bar to indicate a build from today.

    Thanks,
