making coloms in shp files

The things I have:

A shape file containing topo info of the netherlands
this shape file need to be converted to cgpsmapper format.
In each shape file there are several road types entered.
like Pedestrian road, arterial road, highway.

What I would like to do:
I want to edit the shp so that arterial road is used in cgpsmapper.
How can I make sure that all road types are used with the right names.

I have a registerd version of globalmapper and cgpsmapper.

    All that you need to do to get correct road types is reclassify the roads from your Shapefiles to the appropriate built-in road type in Global Mapper, then when you export to a Polish MP format file for use by cGPSMapper the correct type mapping will be done automatically.

    You can edit features either via graphical selection using the Digitizer Tool or by attribute-based selection using the Search->Search by Attributes menu command.

    Is there a way to check for self intersection of poly lines.

    this is not allowed in cgpsmapper

    There is not currently any way in Global Mapper to automatically check for self-intersecting lines.
