How to find all GeoTIFFS within a radius
Andrew Robertson
Global Mapper User
I want to find out how to discover which GeoTIFFs in a directory of many (hundreds of thousands) images are within a given radius of a certain point that I define. Can I do this with Global Mapper? If not, why not? It would be extremely helpful. If anybody has any other ideas as to how I would accomplish this task I would be most grateful.
Thanks kindly!

What you could do is use the File->Create New Map Catalog menu command and add all of the images in the folder to the catalog. This would allow you to graphically see the layout of the files and then easily see which files are near your point of interest.
Let me know if I can be of further assistance.
Thanks,
Mike

Hello.
Is it possible to input hundred of thousands images into a map catalog ?
If the map catalog loads all the images, it may not work without memory problems.
Is it the case ?
Maybe Andrew should create a tfw file for each geotiff (with an exe like listgeo, for example), then, with a text editor, get all the XY coordinates of all the created tfw files (the tfw files give the upper left pixel corner).
I hope this could be a beginning.
Best regards

Yes, you could load hundreds of thousands of images into a map catalog. A map catalog just stores some metadata about each included file (i.e. bounding box, resolution, etc.) and only loads the actual file when needed for display or export. This allows you to efficiently manage huge collections of data without using too much memory.
Let me know if I can be of further assistance.
Thanks,
Mike

This worked great. If I only would have asked this question here a week ago I'd be even happier!

I do have one more question, Mike. Once I have located the files, is there any convenient way to select and load the raster data from those multiple files, without basically writing all the filenames down and hand picking them with the select file dialog?
Thanks.

Andy,
What you could do is zoom to the area with the files that you want, then use the File->Create New Map Catalog menu command to create a new map catalog. This time press the 'Add Onscreen Files' button to add the files from the other map catalog that intersect the screen, which should basically be just the ones that you want. You should then have a map catalog with just the files of interest and you could set that up to display all the time, regardless of zoom level.
Let me know if I can be of further assistance.
Thanks,
Mike
