Limitations

Are there any known limitations on how many files/GB that can be opened within GlobalMapper?

I am trying to load around 1800 files (140MB each, total of around 260GB, mix of GeoTIFF and TIFF with ERS, without overview). By selecting import all from a directory it does not seem to work. However choosing 1/4 of them, dragging them to GlobalMapper, waiting and then load the rest 1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4 seems to work (only finished with first 1/4 because it takes a long time to load - not very strange though:)).

In these cases it would be nice when loading just to load the "surrounding limits" and then not load the image itself. And then perhaps later select some of the images to load manually.

Perhaps something like all images should be loaded "unchecked" in the Control Center Overlay. This would go fast. And then it would be possible to "check" the images that you want to see.

Loading all images into GlobalMapper is just to see that all images are present and are located at the correct place recording to roads etc.

The limitation with the files is actually a Windows limitation on the number of files that can be selected at once in a standard file open dialog box. Unfortunately Windows doesn't tell us when the file list is truncated, we just get a partial list of files back.

In any case, it sounds like the ideal solution for you would be to create a map catalog from your files (File->Create New Map Catalog). Then your files are only loaded when needed for display as you zoom in. The rest of the time you just see the bounding boxes for the file. This allows you to handle pretty much any number of maps at a time.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

    Thanks,

    Mike
