Glaciers

Hi all,
I'm new to GM and loving it ) I want to model old glaciers in valleys by adding a solid feature. (So far so good) Now I want to tip the feature so it's 900 feet at the valley head and 300 feet, say, at the valley mouth. In addition I would like the feature to be truncated by the landscape rather than the other way around.
Can I do some or all of this.
TIA for your help.

Dave,
I think your best bet is to select the area with the Feature Info tool, then press the Vertices button and (after adding them if necessary), edit the per-vertex elevations to what you want. Then, export the results to a 3D KML/KMZ file using the File->Export Vector->Export KML menu command, then load that in Google Earth to get the desired 3D solid display.
Let me know if I can be of further assistance.
Thanks,
Mike

Mike,
Thanks for your suggestions. Where is it possible to change the elevation of a vertex? I can select a vertex but can't see anything in the context menu that will let me do that. Am I missing the obvious? )
And can I ask that you consider an option for area features in the future, where terrain that is higher than the feature takes precedence and is displayed. I'm sure that would invalidate some other options, but it would be a very useful tool.
TIA again.

To edit per-vertex vertices, you need to select the feature with the Feature Info (not the Digitizer) Tool, then press the Vertices button.
For now the 3D display only uses loaded terrain. What you could do though is select your glacier area with the Digitizer Tool, then right click and select to create/flatten terrain from the area. Then, use the File->Combine Terrain menu command and combine the area-based terrain and the actual ground terrain, then select the option to keep whichever is higher in the new terrain layer. This could work, right?
Thanks,
Mike

Mike,
Thank you very much for taking me through that step-by-step. I would never have found that on my own. This really is an exceptional product.
That gives me almost EXACTLY what I want. It would be nice to preserve the glacier's visual appearance after the combine, but that really is nit-picking.
Apologies for taking so long to reply but I have been travelling.
Many thanks for your help again, and congratulations on some superb work,

Mike,
Having merged user created features with elevation data, the hill-shading appears to be done before the Combined Elevation Grid objects are shown. Is there a setting to get around this, please?
TIA
Dave Francis -
Dave,
If you have vector data that you want to show under an elevation grid, you first need to go to the Vector Display tab of the Configuration dialog and change the Vector Display Order During Draw setting to make the layers be drawn in the order they are shown in the Control Center rather than have all vector layers on top. Then go to the Control Center and move your vector data before the elevation grid data.
If you have a User Created Features layer, you first need to select those features with the Digitizer Tool and edit them and move them to a new/different layer as you can't move the User Created Features layer.
Let me know if I can be of further assistance.
Thanks,
Mike

Mike,
Just upgraded to 10.1 and I'm lost. Tried to do what you said but I've got some pretty big areas of ignorance and I'm struggling. After I create an area feature then edit the elevations of the vertices, I can no longer find the area feature menu that allows me to create a surface. That suggest to me that I was doing something wrong before.
Could you describe the process step by boring step please for a geographer who does not have all the jargon )? In addition, do you want to recommend some reading - it will save you a lot of time supporting ;o)
Thanks for a brilliant product - I promise, I will get there,

Dave,
In v10.01, once you have the area feature selected, right-click then select the option under the Advanced Feature Creation menu to create/flatten terrain from the selected area.
Let me know if I can be of further assistance.
Thanks,
Mike

Thanks Mike,
That was easy ) Back on course and got shading working.
Thanks for your patience,
