Displaying 2.5d data in 3dview

Hello,

I have a shapefile with polygonz features (i.e. each vertex of the polygons has xyz). However, when I display this dataset is 3dview, it looks flat, like the z values are ignored. How do I get this data to display in 3dview?

    Bryan,

The 3D viewer in Global Mapper currently only supports displaying loaded vector data draped on top of any loaded 3D surface. If you want to see your 3D polygon data in 3D, first open the Control Center, select the Shapefile layer, right click, then select the option to generate an elevation grid. Make sure to check the box to 'Flatted 3D Area Features'. Once that is done, you should have a gridded elevation surface from the 3D Areas that you can then display in 3D.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

    Thanks,

    Mike

    Mike,

Thanks for the help. I can make an elevation grid. The elevations range from -1 to 50. However, when I display the elevation grid and the shapefile in 3dview, both datasets are displayed on a flat plane. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Any ideas?

OK, it was a vertical exaggeration problem. I'm just making up data and doing some testing and don't have any projection information defined. When Global Mapper asked about the projection information, I simply clicked OK, but that was a geographic system. Once I told the app my shapefile was in meters in xy, it displays as expected in 3d.

It'd be nice to have a "none" option for the projection information where the user can simply specify units.
