I had gotten GlobalMapper because one of the functionalities was the ability to merge shapefiles. This is proving impossible because I have not come-across a tutorial, help file or thread dealing with the merging of shapefiles...

Does GlobalMapper have the ability to merge shape files and if so, what are the steps. I would be very gratefull for any help.Thanks.

Yes, simply use the File->Open Data File menu command to open all of your Shapefiles, then use the File->Export Vector->Export Shapefile menu command to export the results to a single new Shapefiles.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

    Thanks,

Thanks it worked......though it has led me to another problem.

I had created two street level shapefiles maps using another GIS app (mapwinGis), by tracing the streets on a satellite/aerial image and adding the resultant lines to another polyline shapefile layer.

I didn't georeference and assign a projection to the initial jpeg images and so the reslutant shapefiles cannot be positioned accurately and do not merge properly in Global mapper....

Please how do I assign Geographic co-ordinates to my shapefile (like each vertex having a corresponing lon/lat co-ordinates), I heard I can accomplish this with Global Mapper.

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You can geo-rectify a Shapefiles (or any loaded file) by opening the Control Center, right-clicking on the layer, then selecting the option to Reposition the layer.
