Defining custom symbols

I have a simple question regarding defining custom symbols to be used, for example, to display point data. Perhaps the solution is in the docs, but I haven't yet found it.

I assume that any custom symbols must be in bitmap form. Should the custom symbol be a Windows icon bitmap (.ico) or something else? Plus, what is the best bitmap size to use? 16x16?

Thanks.

The symbol can be a .bmp or .ico file of any size, but .ico files are recommended as they have built-in support for transparency.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

    Thanks,
