Export to DEM - which input?

We are trying to export to DEM. Using an ASCII- point file as input. However the option to Export to DEM is greyed out. What is the preferrable format to get into GlobalMapper, and then export as DEM for use in ArcView/ArcInfo?

    You have to have some sort of gridded elevation data loaded in order to export a DEM file. To generate an elevation grid from your ASCII data, either select the 'Create Elevation Grid' option when importing your ASCII data, or after loading the data simply open the Overlay Control Center, right-click on the layer, then select the option to create an elevation grid from the data. Once you've done this the Export DEM menu item should be available.
