Path profile through chimney || optimize display settings
Dear Global Mappers,
i have a high vertical building (old chimney) and i would like to export some path profiles for a static analysis.
I would like to solve a display setting issue => I 'd like to see the whole 30m chimney without stretching the baseline. If i set the scale factor to 1 i only see the bottom part of the chimney.
What is the right setting here? I am confused...
Thanks a lot.

Hi Alex,
Yes I have noticed what you are talking about before myself and I'm not sure if this is a bug?
As you already probably know when you set the scale factor to 1 you are working at a "natural scale" i.e. with no horizontal or vertical exaggeration, but then the "Clamp Top Displayed Elevation" disappears in the profile view window. The "Clamp Top Displayed Elevation" seems to only work when you tick either the "Use Default Elevation Scale" or "Use Custom Elevation Spacing of" options. Again, I'm not sure if this is a bug?
If I need to see parts of my section up close and take non-distorted measurements etc. what I do is to set the Scale Factor to 1 and then Zoom in with my mouse middle roller button and then hold it down to Pan and take measurements (N.B. you must zoom in first before you can pan).
However, if I need to have a natural scale section for display purposes I export the profile to AutoCAD and display it at 1:1.
To export a profile to AutoCAD my workaround is to right click on profile window and select save path as CSV File as shown below (if you select Save Path to DXF all you get is where the section was cut in plan view rather than the section itself!). Then I open the csv (see second screen grab below) and delete columns to end up with just Total distance and Elevation i.e. X and Y profile coordinates . I then use the CONCATENATE command in Excel to add a comma between X and Y (see third screen grab below) and then paste the whole column of X,Y coordinates into AutoCAD as a poly line/PLINE command (see fourth screen grab below).
Hope that helps and apologies if this is already obvious to you. Maybe the Blue Marble folks need to confirm if its a bug or not?
Ta,
Alistair.

Wow - thank you Alistair.
That's a lot of work (-around) you put into this each time.
There must be a more slim solution, first for the displaying in total and second to the export (i.e. as DWG).
I asked the Global Mapper Team to take a look at it.
Best

Hi Alex,
Yeah its a pain in the butt, but I'm not aware of any other way of doing it...
I hope the display thing is just a bug and the Blue Marble folks can fix it. Streamlining the export of a profile as a profile would also be a great addition!

First off, I agree with Alex and have similar issues. I'd like to be able to display at 1:1 and save the png out showing the whole feature.
As far as workarounds go, there might be an easier way - You can save the POINTS displayed in the profile as a DXF file. (Be aware, they seem to always save with meters as the unit, so need to be scaled in CAD. Bug #GM-21038 is related to this I believe, but I can't find the bug report number I submitted a year or two ago that relates to this).
