Split Shapefile (KML) at two vertices fails with hole in area

Dear Global Mappers,

splitting area features at two vertices is quite easy, but now i have an area with a hole inside and this causes trouble.

When i select the two vertices i would like to split at also the hole area is selected and the option "split selected areas at selected vertices" doesn't appear.

How would you perform splits like this?

Thx in advance

Alex

    Hi AlexW,

Another workflow is to export to KMZ again with an Export Bounds:

    1.     Draw a boundary through the vertices and around what you want to keep

    2.     Select the area feature

    3.     Right-click > Export

    4.     Choose KMZ

    5.     Go to the Export Bounds tab

    6.     Select Crop to Selected Area Feature(s)

    7.     OK

    Cheers,

  • Hello!

My English is very bad. Could you clarify what kind of result do you need? You can just a picture.

  • Hi,

    thanks for your Email.

I would like to cut the orange area into two areas (at the green markers).

But the red area in the middle (the hole) is also selected when i select any inner vertice.

And because of this i cannot use the "split selected areas at selected vertices" function.

  • Here's a file to check it.

  • Steve, thanks a lot. 🤩🙏

That's a great workaround. And so simple. Why didn't i try this path?

    😂🙈

I can do the job to split this "donut" now - though i would really like to understand a little better the behavior and functionalities behind...

So, if anyone still wants to comment here, you're welcome.

  • Here's another way to do it. This method will split the area feature so that you can delete the unwanted area:

    1. Draw Lines across the Area Features you wish to split. The lines can go outside of the area feature but they must at minimum touch the edges!
    2. Holding down the Ctrl key - Select the Line(s) and then the Area feature (doesn’t appear to like using select all or drawing a selection around all the features for me)
    3. Right-click > Crop/Combine/Split Functions > Crop Selected Area(s) to Selected Lines(s)
