Scale is empty

Hi, I am starting to use the map layout editor. I had no end of issues trying to get a landscape rather than a portrait page in Royal format - but I managed it in the end, by transposing the height and width dimensions. In other words, I put landscape in the portrait box and vice versa. But now I want to stat adding things to the layout, and have a problem adding a scale bar. There seems to be an error, described as 'scale is empty'. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong? I specified the properties (distance 600 and the unit in miles). I tried the different dropdown options such as 'label all tick marks', and also tried longer distances, e.g. 1000 miles.

    I see that if I choose automatic tick spacing I get a condensed scale bar with ticks, but whenever I specify the distance or stretch the scale bar box, I get the scale is empty error
