Ability to change / set the vertical datum of a layer before exporting

I definitely would like to be able to change and / or confirm the vertical datum of a layer before exporting. I can't believe this isn't already possible the same way I change or set the horizontal datum under tools / configure / projection. Likewise the ability to change or set the measurement unit of the vertical datum is badly needed.
