Cropping large data sets

I have a large data set of overlapping area features that I need to crop. The highlighted area in the image below is my cropping boundary and I want to remove all of the other features within this boundary. Every time I try to do this GM hangs up...... Is there some other way to remove all the data within the boundary?

I need to export the data as a shapefile when I have this cropping figured out.
