GM 24.1 attemps to save gmw file, fails, and erases the gmw file from the disk
Hello,
Twice this happened to me in the last 3 days with the 24.1 version. I did not use 24.0 for long enough to say, and it never happened in earlier versions.
While saving my gmw file, I sometimes get a short error message (one sentence) informing that the gmw file cannot be saved. I cannot remember the word by word message (- and I am in no rush to see it again). The same file could be saved several times in the same session but this time it fails.
It follows that there is no way to save the changes made since the last backup.
More than this, at the time the message is displayed on screen, the full content of the file is erased from the disk. The file is there but has 0 kb. Retrieving the latest safe copy from another drive is the only way not to loose all the file content.
I cannot give much more information on the circumstances of this crash, I have not done anything unusual. These two crashes happened after a couple of hours of pause in GM use. Perhaps was some process stopped in the meantime. Perhaps a coincidence, two instances are not enough to say.
Any idea how to avoid this again (apart from reverting to v23)?
Thanks

Hi Daniel,
We have seen on occasion where writes to a large .gmw file will sometimes fill part of the file with binary zeroes. We suspect this has to do with disk errors, but when we detect it we just report the error so the save can be tried again.
What I would suggest is turning your error logging level up to Debug on the Advanced tab of the Configuration dialog, then if it happens again provide your errlog.txt file (either here or to geohelp@bluemarblegeo.com) so we might get a better idea what is happening.
Thanks,
Mike

Hi again Mike,
The gmw file is fairly large, 517 Mb. I have turned the error level up to Debug. Very useful option. Thanks for the tip. I will let you know!

Hi Mike,
The error came again today. I turned the loging level to debug, but there is nothing written in the log. The latest information in the log correponds to my previous opening/closing file activity more than one hour earlier.
The replaced gmw file is really empty, there are no binary zeroes inside.
Attached is a screenshot, which is all what I can get from this error.
Fyi, I am using the same files as in our other ongoing discussion (ENVI bsq files). The IMG/HDR issue is solved.
Cheers,
daniel

Hi Daniel,
The 'Unable to create workspace file' error is showing up when we are unable to even open the specified file for writing. I'll add some additional information about why Windows isn't able to open the file to see if that gives a clue. I'll let you know when a new daily build with that will be available.
Thanks,
Mike

Tomorrow's v24.1.x daily build should show additional information in the error dialog when the .gmw file cannot be opened for writing.
Thanks,
Mike
