is it possible to export a tiled pdf based on scale

hi there

i have a script that loops a directory, loads a shapefile and exports a pdf.

some of these files are large, and should be tiled, others are fine to export as is.

is there a possible script command to determine the scale / size of the loaded layer and to use this value to either export as is or export tiled?

any advice is much appreciated.
