invalid polygon problem

I'm trying to combine a layer of state polygons that have Precambrian outcrops cut out of them, but all the Minnesota areas disappeared when I ran the Combine process. I split the layer by states and ran the Invalid Polygon process on Minnesota and got an "All areas were valid" message, which split it into several polygons. When I tried to combine those, however, I got a polygon join failed message, even though I'd previously gotten a valid area message:

All the other states combine without any problems. Attached are 2 files, one of the combined states and one of Minnesota. For some reason, I wasn't able to attach a zip of both layers together.

    Just delete that small island pointed by the invalid polygon tool.
