Classify ground LiDAR for locating archaeological ruins

Are there any secrets or special techniques to classifying LiDAR data as ground and including low structures as ground?

I use LiDAR data to locate and map archaeological ruins in varying surface conditions including dense low vegetation. I generally want to see the ruins as a part of the resulting surface model so I can determine the feature's characteristics. Such features include:

  • Low mounds .25-1 meter above ground surface. Typically irregular, but vaguely rectangular or oval in shape
  • Rock/rubble walls from ground surface up to .75 meters high by .25-.75 meters wide with irregular surfaces
  • Some large square or rectangular structures with sloping sides from .5 to 15 meters high.

Thanks,

Timothy
