Buffer around flight path

Hi all!

First of all, I am quite a newbie here so please excuse my infinite ignorance. Having said that, I am trying to create (using v17.2) a variable width buffer zone around a line (defined as a series of points) imported as a .kml file. When I select the buffer option and select initial and final widths, the first point has the initial width and the second point already gets the final width, while the path has some hundreds of points. I would like to get the final width at the last point.

Any hints of what am I doing wrong here? I guess it might be related to the way the line is defined and thus I need to convert it somehow. Thanks!
