Islands and lakes

I have two datasets dating back to the 90s or so, depicting lakes and islands in Canada. (One shapefile for islands, one for lakes, mutually exclusive.) I would love to be able to punch the islands out of the lakes, because I'm creating a map in Illustrator that will have a relief background image, which I want to "show through" the islands. GM can subtract islands from *one* background object very nicely, but in this situation there are hundreds of lakes. Suggestions? Thanks!!

Wow. That actually works! The description of the tool gives no clue as to what it actually does, but your pictures nail it. Thanks!! 😎
