Suggested Improvement - Map View Element to "remember" displayed layers

Map Layout Editor is improving with every version of Global Mapper!

However, what would take it to another level would be if each Map View Element (MVE) could “remember” which layers were displayed, so that if you have multiple layouts (I sometimes have 20 or more layouts/report figures in one workspace!) you don’t have to spend an age turning on/off the various layers in the Control Centre to create/re-create each one. It’s particularly time consuming when you maybe have to come back to an old job to make revisions and you have to remember what was displayed in each layout/figure :#

AutoCAD allows users to turn on and off layers within each “view window” (their equivalent to the MVE) and remembers what was displayed and it would be awesome if GM could do the same. (AutoCAD also allows users to modify line-types, colours, lineweights etc. within each view window which is probably too complex for GM, but I’d be delighted if it could just remember what was displayed in each).

Are the Blue Marble gurus thinking of this as a future improvement?

    Hello,

We have an open feature request for this functionality (GM-4836). At the moment, it is not scheduled for implementation, but we are currently working on the list of new features for Global Mapper 23 and several other people have also requested the ability to select layers for each layout page, so that improves the chances that it will be included.

    Thank you for your input.

    Cheers,
    Bob

    Hi Blue Marble Folks.

Thank you so much for adding the Layers tab to the Map View Element within the Map Layout Editor in V23.0! This is a HUGE improvement and finally brings some sanity to the figure production workflow.

Its now akin to AutoCAD by having all layers turned on in Model space and then selecting which layers you want to display in Viewports in Pape Space - I totally get it!

You've made a middle aged man very happy! 😁

    Cheers,

  • Thanks Bob - I live in hope!

The recent addition of the "Filter Layers" tool on the MLE map legend using tick boxes has been a big improvement. I had thought maybe you guys could add similar functionality/tick boxes to the Map View Element that gets saved (i.e. "remembered") with the layout .

Yes please, seconded! We have been asking for this for years, it would be a big timesaver. We don't tend to use layouts, so it would be more flexible if GMW could allow 'saved view' (e.g. vectorworks/sketchup)

Ditto, thirded.  The functionality needs to be in the Control Center, so that multi-layer exports (Geotiffs etc) can be recalled.  It is common for us to produce five+ different map outputs, based on layers turned on/off, for a single project.  The best we can do at present is to take a screenshot of the layer state for each output - assuming that is possible and the expanded Control Center is fully visible on a page.  Fairly archaic!

Thanks Bob.  I don't know how your feature request system works, but you might want to add it to this one from 2015 - basically the same thing:

Also, this is basically the same request as @CarrickCon made (although he has a different way of exporting), so surely better to combine.

    Hello BillB,

I was pretty sure that we already had a feature request for this, but could not find it. Thanks for the reference to the other thread. I have merged the requests, and they are all together in GM-1200.

    Cheers,
    Bob
