Global Mapper v25.0

Distribute elevation along a line

Hi all,

I have lines with no elevation. I want to use those lines to prepare a DEM (those lines represent an area to be excavated...).

I wish to enter the elevation data but the polylines count numerous points as they describ arcs of a circle. Plus, the excavation follows a continuous slope (I don't want to enter the same elevation for all points, would be too easy ;)).

I hopped there would be a function to distribute the elevation between to extremities. The only thing to do would be entering elevation at extremities and let GM do the job. But seems there is not.

What solution do you suggest ? Is there a tool I missed ?

Thanks in advance!

I am joining an example where the two extremities have an elevation, other points are at 0.

    Hi Nicolas,

I loaded your sample SHP file into Global Mapper and zoomed to its extents. Then I loaded some DEM to provide elevation data in the surrounding area; I used the online ASTER GDEMvs Worldwide Elevation Data source that we have available in our online data sources. Then I selected the line using the digitizer, and from the main menu selected "Digitizer" / "Analysis/Measurement" / "Apply Elevations to Selected Features". This brings up a dialog: you should use "Terrain Layers" and "Replace It with the New Elevation Value". This added elevations at each vertex of the line.

    Hope that this helps.

    Best regards,

You can actually do what you ve mentioned (if I understood ).
Double click the line and go to vertices tab:
Select and add your elevation to first and last vertex.
Select all vertices and use Evenly Spread Elevation...
