TIN file parametres

Hi guys, when creating an elevation grid from 3D vector or point cloud there is an option to create a TIN file.  Is there any way of reducing the size of that dataset but pushing out the parameters?  Im no expert but hopefully you can see what Im asking as the TIN file for a large dataset is often massive to the point that the processor struggles.  If there is another way to create a TIN where the grids can be spaced further apart Id be grateful for assistance.
