You can select the area feature(s) with the Digitizer Tool, then right click and select the edit options, then edit the style and move the translucency slider to make the areas partially transparent so that the underlying data will show through.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

    Thanks,

    Hi Mike,

Old..old topic, but searching the forums for "layer transparency" gives this thread.

Any update? I just want to turn an entire copy of a layer slightly transparent and throw it under other stuff.

Example: Road surface type...so as I'm working on a map, I not only have the road class (residential, hwy), but underneath, it's surface type (paved, gravel, etc). But I want that surface type layer transparent.

But in the Line Styles panel/s, there's still no way to en masse change all the "List of Values" and add some transparency values to them. I seem to remember I could do that with Area/Polygon styles.

I don't really want to have to select them with the Edit tool and change values. I would be easier just to change an entire layer's transparency, regardless of data type, from the Control Center.

    Thanks,
