Export Global Mapper Package File

Hello,

I work for an Oil and Gas company in the UK and I have a 275 gb woth of data which -not all but I presume most of it- is linked to a Global Mapper model that I need to split into two.

What we did was use the same model for two different jobs, and now each client wants us to send them the parts that correspond to their study.

What I have been doing is selecting the area that I want to create a stand alone model for, then go to file->export global Mapper package file -> i choose the highest possible simplification but the whole procedure seems to last for ever.

I commandeered another PC to do dedicate to that job only, so I can work on mine but still, after a full 24h run of the analysis I am only at 35% of the exporting package progress bar and at 25% at a "exporting geo tiff file" bar.

Also at some stages I get a "divide by zero" warning and the whole procedure stops, until I press "ok" to continue. I dont know if that will have an effect on the final product.

Is that normal? We have also contacted another company, thinking to outsource the job and when we told them that the model that we want to be split into 2 could be aroung 275gb they said that they can do in 10-14 days and they will be running the procedure on a few PCs simultaneously.

Is that reasonable or am I doing something wrong?

The file that I am splitting into two parts consists of

quite a few satellite images -spanning more than 300km-
a digital elevation model
and user created features -pipeline routing, city areas, rivers, roads-

I will be looking forward to your response.

Many Thanks,
Ioannis

    Ioannis,

What format is your imagery originally in? I'm wondering if perhaps some of the imagery files are too large for the GeoTIFF format which is used internally in Global Mapper Package files. I'm not surprised at the long length of time required to export the data given its massive size. The simplification option only affects vector data and not raster layers like imagery.

What you might try is using the Gridding tab when exporting the package file to break up the export into smaller pieces. Once you get that to export you can load those back in and do a single new export to get them all in a single file if you need that.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

    Thanks,

    Mike

    Many thanks for that Mike

I have a collection of large jpegs satellite files under a big satellite image which was downloaded from the LandSat 7 satellite. I thought to include all the images that were provided to us from the client, just to be nice -not that we really used them to setup the model- I had no idea that it would take so long. Currently the process is at 45% of the Geo Tiff file and when it finishes I might have a go with the Grinding option and get rid of some of the images.

My understanding is that after the exporting process is done with the Geo Tiff file it will move on to other files and everything will speed up? Because we are worried at the office that there might be more files like the geo tiff which will need equal -or more- amounts of time to be exported.

    Regards,
    Ioannis

    Ioannis,

Is the large Landsat7 file that you are referring to downloaded from the option under the File->Download Online Imagery menu command in Global Mapper? If so, that is definitely the cause of the extreme slowness as that server can be extremely slow and unreliable at times, especially when pulling large quantities of high resolution data from it.

I would suggest instead downloading Landsat7 tiles from https://zulu.ssc.nasa.gov/mrsid/mrsid.pl and using those rather than the online data source, or just hide the Landsat7 layer prior to exporting your package file.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

    Thanks,

    Mike
