Is there a way to easily control the text in the map legend element in the Map Layout Editor?

I want to add my own text freely behind the icon in the legend and even delete some icons.

I think it is is possible to do this in Arc and maybe Mapinfo.  It would GM even more of a killer if this were so.

I found the answer in using the palette to label map legend element which used the layer descriptions.
