How to insert vertices into line or polygon without any splitting occuring

Is there a way to insert more vertices into lines or polygons, at spaced intervals, without any splitting occurring, where the vertices become PART of that line or polygon, instead of a new separate layer?
Can’t figure out how to do this. Any suggestions greatly appreciated - many thanks! v18, build (111516)

Select a line, right-click, look in the submenus for the Resample option. I see it under
Move / Reshape feature(s) and
Crop/Combine/Split functions
The function can be set to separate (split) the line at the new vertices, but it is not the default on my system.
The points are included as though you had created the line with all of the new points, and are part of the same object and layer.
