creating nearest neighbour lines

I have a data set of individual properties (kmzs).  I'm trying to estimate the length of fibre cable to connect all of the proprties.  I've tried selecting all of the properties and created a line feature.  This connects all of the properties using lines.  So, questions:

• Is this the best method to use for the purpose?
• If so, how do I find out the total length of the created lines?
• some of the connectivity has not chosen nearest neighbours but have gone a bit astray.  Is there anyway of reducing/eliminating this?
