17.2.0 issues

Nice to see new release 17.2, but here are a couple of problems with 17.2.0 dated 20160517.

(1)
Background: there's a new installation framework, InstallAware. Under Windows 10, for previous releases, we would be asked to reboot via a modal dialog at the end of installation, but the installer would automatically launch the application regardless. That was a disconcerting contradiction, though it didn't seem to cause problems (at least for me).

That's corrected now. Good.

But the new installer fails to install a shortcut to the Windows 10 Start Menu. This also means that GM can't be pinned to the Start screen. That does matter. (We still have the desktop shortcut, that's it. I normally delete desktop shortcuts, too much clutter.) I know the Windows 10 Start Menu framework is a total PIA, almost unusable, but this needs fixing all the same.

(2)
The What's New document installed with 17.2.0 is for 17.1. (We see the notes for 17.2 during installation, but the installed version is outdated.)

    Hello,

I have opened bugs #18184 and #18185 for these issues.  We will post a message on this thread when the bugs are fixed.

You can pin the GM shortcut to the start screen by right-clicking on the desktop icon.

    Cheers,

    Bob

    Thanks Bob.

Note that this is incorrect, at least for build 10586:

You can pin the GM shortcut to the start screen by right-clicking on the desktop icon.

You can pin the desktop shortcut to the taskbar this way, but not to the Start screen.

At this point nothing can be added to the Start screen except via the Start menu, which is not under user control. Again, it's a total PIA, poor UI design that for now we must live with.

Sorry about that.  I thought I had used my desktop icon to add GM to the Start screen, but I must have used the Start menu shortcut from an earlier build.

    Cheers,

    Bob

I'm going to weigh in on this issue as well. I have an icon to launch the program on the Start Menu tiles but not in the full app listing. I also noted that the Type shown in Windows Explorer for .gmw files is now ""$GM_APP_NAME$ Workspace" which is likely linked to a poor install.

What operating system are you using?  Do you have more than one version of Global Mapper installed?

    Cheers,

    Bob,

I should have been clearer about my precise situation too.

Clean installation of Windows 10 build 10586 (not an upgrade). Automatic updates to April 2016. (Regular track, not insider.)

Fresh installation of GM 17.2.0. No prior GM versions or builds.

bmg_bob: I'm running Windows 10 (was a clean install last fall) Build 10586.318 on regular track. I had GM 17.1 32-bit and 64-bit installed before I did the 17.2 updated to both versions. I did have GM v16 prior to updating to v17; however, I did remove v16.

How are you getting on with Windows 10?

What builds are you testing against?

Would you like us to test against some other Windows 10 build?

Great. Build 17.2.1 (20160527) fixes issue (1). We now have a Start menu shortcut in Windows 10, and we can pin it to the Start screen. That's fixed.

Issue (2) is less important, but not fixed. The "What's New" document is still for 17.1, not 17.2.

How does this happen, twice? Isn't this an easy thing?

I had asked for an independent posting of the "What's New" document for 17.2 but got no answer.

Here is the 17.2 part of "What's New" as a text file, currently seen during installation but nowhere else.

It's a shame because there's a lot of new stuff!

Oops...I'm not sure what happened with the What's New document.  I thought it had been fixed.  We will look at it again.

Note that the help file does contain the complete list of new features and bug fixes since Global Mapper 17.0.

    Cheers,

    Bob,

Thanks for pointing this out, it makes a big difference so I'm sorry I'd missed it.

Note that the help file does contain the complete list of new features and bug fixes since Global Mapper 17.0.

I know Mike thinks hardly anyone reads the What's New document and he may be right. Some of us do--but you'd hope we'd also read the manual.
