Geologic Map Polygon Color Fill and Attributes

Posting a series of questions in the hopes of assistance in developing a workflow for my current and future projects. Current project is a State Geologic map in Shape file format.  One shape file each for Geologic Units (Polygon/no lines/no fill colors), Geologic Boundries (lines) and Faults (lines).

My focus is on the Geologic Units and assigning fill colors against 104 different rock types(LABEL).  Basic solid fill colors only (BUT specific to the type of rock unit, ie, Volcanics are in the purpleish colors), nothing fancy like fill styles.  The plotting of the 104 rock units generates 34k polygons.  This is not a standard geologic map from USGS mrdata, this one is a bit more detailed.  I have read over this forum topic from Aug 2015 but don't think I want to do that math.  As you might imagine I am a novice with this GIS stuff but do find GM the most user friendly and have been onboard since v15.

So, I need an automated way to match my fill colors to the rock unit names(LABEL), attached is a couple lines from the spreadsheet csv.  I did experiment and entered a new column that reflected the RGB(xxx, xxx, xxx) and it worked upon import/export.  I did not have a column for "closed=true" but it still worked.  I then saved the new file as a gmworkspace and exported one copy as a csv, another copy as a kmz the thrid one as a new shapefile.  The shp and csv load back into gm perfectly with the correct colors.  The kmz loads into GE perfectly with the correct colors also.

Now here is where I need the advice and guidance. I need a fast, automated and efficient way to match the feature (LABEL) to my colors, which I designated in this format  Fill_Color = RGB(xxx, xxx, xxx)

Yes I know I can go through the entire spreadsheet and group/fill down but there are 34,000 polygons so I would prefer to have a tool or setting within GM for this.  Other future projects for me also have the same issue, so this would be something I would find very useful.

I would also like to "give" gm the color coding I have created for each of the rock units so that you could post it for free to anyone in the future that might need them for their geologic projects.  "Current" color coding on usgs mrdata is not "current" with the newer standards.

Thats it, let me know what I can do to make this work and flow better.  Thanks in advance.

Mike and Josie in GM Support provided help with this issue and I am posting their response below.  Thanks Again!!

    Hello Tad,

I've added support for pulling the existing styles used in any vector file in to the Global Mapper UI so you can save them back out to a .gm_layer_style file for applying to other layers with the same attributes/names. I have placed new builds with the latest changes at http://data.bluemarblegeo.com/downloads/global-mapper/dailybuilds/ for you to try.

To do this, use the following steps:

    1) Load the layer (like your CSV with styles) in to Global Mapper

    2) Open Control Center

    3) Select layer and press Options

    4) Go to Area Styles tab

    5) Select the 'Apply Styling Based on Attribute/Name Values'

    6) Select <Feature Name>, then press 'Init from Values'

    7) The list of values/styles should be automatically filled in using the names/styles used in your layer

    8) Use 'Save to File' button to save the .gm_layer_style file which defines the names and associated styles

    9) Load other data with the same labels but with no styling.

    10) Open Options dialog for other data and go to Area Styles tab

    11) Press 'Load from File' to load the .gm_layer_style file and apply the styles to the new file

    Best Regards,

    Mike Childs

After using Mikes new update I was able to create gm_layer_style files with ease.  Below I am posting the Geologic Style Files I created (color schema and font size) for future users to take and use as needed.  Just open the attached file in notebook and rename the extension to .gm_layer_style file, then follow Mike's directions in the above post.

    Thanks Again to GM Support!
