Are there white papers or other documentation about lidar classification methods?

I'd like to use GlobalMapper's lidar point cloud classifying routines in my dissertation research, but I need more information about how the classification routines work.  Are there published articles, white papers, or other documentation that describes these methods (even if just the general category of lidar classification methods used)?  The 'Help' documentation is very sparse for the lidar module and offers no details about how points are classified.

I recommend that you contact Blue Marble Geographics Support directly about this (geohelp@bluemarblegeo.com).  They can provide journal references for articles that were used when we implemented the LiDAR classification functions.  Please be as specific as possible about the types of classification you are interested in.
