This setting appears at the bottom of Configuration|Miscellaneous Advanced Options.

What are the effects of having it switched off (the default), and switched on?

    Hi Tim,

Older instances of SQL Server stored information about spatial tables using two tables called geometry_columns and spatial_ref_sys. Checking the "Microsoft SQL Server: Read Tables..." option tells Global Mapper to access spatial table definitions using this scheme. Note that any version of SQL Server can use this scheme, but it was the only way to read spatial tables in SQL Server 2008.

Newer instances use a set of system tables to store this information. Leaving the "Microsoft SQL Server: Read Tables..." option unchecked tells Global Mapper to use this method to retrieve spatial table definitions.

    Cheers,

    Bob
