Global Mapper v25.0

3D model with texture from terrain and orthorectified image

Hi,

I'm new to global mapper (I have v15) and GIS in general. We have pictures from a UAV, that have been processed in Correlator 3D. It outputs a DSM (in GeoTIFF, LAS, etc) and an ortho image (GeoTIFF). Previously, I tried an evaluation version of PhotoScan Pro, which could output a .obj 3D model with the ortho image as a texture. Now, I can't do that with Correlator 3D, but I'd like a workaround. I tought about converting the DSM to a 3D DXF, and then combine the 3D model with the ortho image to have a textured DSM, but I can't quite figure out how to.

If any of you could help me it'd be awesome!

Thank you for your time guys and gals!

If you have a terrain grid loaded in Global Mapper you can export it to several 3D DXF formats using the File->Export->Export Elevation Data menu command. Hopefully one of those will work for you.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

    Hi,

So that's to export the terrain mesh. That I know how to. I was wondering if someone knew how to apply a texture (ie: orthorectified photo) to this mesh.

    Thanks!

You can export an image using the File->Export->Export Raster Data menu, but there isn't a supported format that has both terrain and draped imagery all in one, except maybe 3D PDF.

I am able to view you 3D model,If possible please share it with the details so that i can also share some views.
  • Hi!

I'm replying to old message but I'm trying this very same thing, export orthophoto draped on dtm. It works with 3D PDF but with collada and OBJ there comes error message saying: "No data is loaded that is compatible with the selected 3D model export. You must have 3D vector data loaded in order to export to a 3D model format."

Is this somehow possible in latest versions?

    Thanks,
    - Sampsa

    Hi sampsa,

I'm sorry to say that it's not possible at this time. We have a related feature request (#16824) that I'll expand to cover this case as well. I don't know when this feature will be scheduled for implementation, but I'll add this information to the bug ticket, and we'll notify you back here when it's available.

    Best regards,

    ~Jeff

Has there been any updates on this feature?  I also have an OBJ and a texture file I'd like to merge together and export to a 3D pdf.
  • Hey All, I thought I would share my workflow for this.
    https://sketchfab.com/models/5e219a3481a5478990e13e919120b1df

I'll create an area feature to crop my 3d model too, select it, and then export JUST the elevation grid to FBX (without texture embedded) using the area feature as a crop boundary.

Upload to Sketchfab, and then work on the texture while that's processing.
Using the same area feature to crop my export, I'll export all of the layers I want included to a PNG format, with "texture" in the title (SF requirement). Afterwards, I'll log in to sketchfab, uploaded the PNG texture file and apply it to the model.

It's not a silver bullet, but it's definitely effective for my needs.
