I am a total beginner to Global Mapper and the GIS world

I have a digital orthophotograph (1:100 resolution, 24 bit natural color) of a 6000 acre property to which I am trying to add each boundry of a large number of tracts of land to the orthophotograph as a line or an area feature.

I am using Deed Plotter to convert the deed calls (texas metes and bounds) of the land tracts into a line drawing. I'd like to overlay the line drawings onto the photograph.

I thought that Global Mapper would be a good tool to do this. However, I can't seem to make it work. Deed Plotter can be saved as a dxf file, bitmap, x,y coordinate or its own file format (.ndp extention?)

I tried the rectify option and got the line drawing with a large white background that looked exactly like a printout of the drawing on letter size paper and it came out at a funny angle. I was able to get the lines close to the correct location but not exactly.

I tried to convert to a dxf file and bring it in as a line feature. I never could find the line feature - it went into space somewhere or if I brought in the line feature first and then the photo I couldn't find the photo.

I'm sorry - everything about GM is new to me. Is there a way to bring in the lines at the spot where they are supposed to be on the map? Should I be using a different software than global mapper to do this? Please help

Loading the DXF file after the photo is the proper approach. Most likely your problem is the projection that you are specifying for the DXF file. When you load the DXF file you need to select the projection that the coordinates in the DXF file are in so that it can be properly placed over the orthophoto, which I'm assuming is already correctly placed.

If you don't know this information, just select the default, then open the Overlay Control Center, right-click on the DXF layer, then select the Reposition option. This will allow you to graphically rectify the linework to the photo and get it positioned correctly. If you can determine the correct projection for the DXF file coordinates (Deed Plotter should tell you I would think) that would be the preferred way.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

    Thanks,

    Mike
